Brief: Overhaul the entire garden, creating space for work, cooking, entertaining and family time

Our clients bought, refurbished and extended their property almost 15 years ago. Focus was on the house and not the garden, and as a result the space was dated and underutilised.
Initially our brief was to amend the existing layout to incorporate a training pool and garden studio, but it quickly became apparent the old features of the garden were getting in the way of what could be an incredible space. The climbing frame had been outgrown, the pergola was rotting, and the fence was on its last legs.
The design scope was increased to completely restructure the space, include an outdoor kitchen and louvered canopy, increase planting areas for year-round interest, and replace all hard and soft landscaping.

With an expanded brief we have really been able to utilise the full potential of this generous garden, including all elements on our client’s wish list.
A harmonious materials palette of limestone, clay pavers, gravel and Accoya decking compliment the aesthetic of the main house, whilst the new structures (studio, storage shed and canopy) will be almost black. This will allow the planting to really stand out, and help these features settle into the space.
The terrace along the rear of the house has been expanded outwards to give a more generous seating area, with the upper area housing a fully equipped kitchen and dining area with louvered canopy and built-in storage.
Pathways link the various zones of the garden allowing easy access to the pool, lawn, garden studio and evening sun seating area. Generous planting beds will create framed views throughout the garden, and help soften the edges of this geometric design.
