“Curves and deep planting beds have been used to manipulate the proportions of this awkwardly shaped plot”
Brief: Turn the wide but shallow plot into a useable space for relaxing and entertaining
Current Stage: Design Development
Having recently refurbished their property to a beautiful standard internally, our clients were unsure how to tackle their awkwardly shaped garden. The plot is wide but not particularly deep, has a generous but underused side passage, and is overlooked by taller neighbouring buildings.
The clients have young children and wish to provide space for them to play without making this a focal point of the garden. They also want space to relax, to entertain family and friends, and to create engaging views from the large windows of their living spaces.

Solution: Hide the boundaries of the garden with planting to make the space feel deeper
Curves and deep planting beds have been used to manipulate the proportions of this awkwardly shaped plot, creating a journey through the garden and linking each of the various zones.
An outdoor kitchen and dining area sits under a louvered pergola, allowing the clients to relax and entertain in any weather or season. Large multi-stem trees in strategic locations will provide gentle privacy, and a living willow teepee for the children hides at the end of a stepping stone path.
Water bowls are a source of gentle sound and movement, whilst a relaxed gravel seating area surrounding a fire pit provides additional space for entertaining.
The side alley, previously a distracting void space, will be separated with a fence and gate, and will house a recessed practice mat and net for our golf loving client.
