“Creating distinct zones with different materials helps to make the space feel larger”

Brief: Improve the view from the large bifold doors, providing space to relax whilst concealing a hot tub

Current Stage: Completed

Set just off a busy road in Esher, our clients wanted to create a calm and welcoming retreat which provided inviting views from their open plan living space.

Exposed fencing and an expanse of tired artificial lawn dominated the space, with planting pushed to the sides in narrow beds.

Our brief was to create more of a journey through the space, creating a dedicated area to conceal a hot tub, with plenty of space for relaxing and entertaining.

Solution: Use dark boundaries make the garden feel larger, with architectural planting for interest

The garden’s existing boundary fences have been painted black to help the planting stand out, whilst a feature timber screen masks the awkward shape of the plot and hides the client’s hot tub.

Creating distinct zones with different materials helps to make the space feel larger. Gravel, concrete slabs and clay pavers in complementary, natural tones provide a perfect foundation for architectural planting with a neutral colour palette.

The central clay paver area is a flexible space for cooking, dining and relaxing, with easy access back and forth from the house.
